Dry film lubricant flouropolymer coatings are quite prevalent in day-to-day life. When you fly on a commercial plane, apply the brakes in your car, switch on an air conditioner or watch your favorite drivers win a race, it's likely that dry film lubricant flouropolymer coatings are improving the workability of these machines. When coated with flouropolymer materials, small bearings on jet engines, brake actuators, pistons and bearings operate smoother, longer and safer.
These remarkable low-friction materials combine the capabilities of two various high-performance engineering plastics to achieve a coefficient of friction the lowest of any known solid. Since the inception of dry lubricants when ancient mechanics used graphite, talc and other slick powders to reduce sliding friction, Flouropolymers have been combined with the newest high-temperatures. But with the development of modern lubricant coatings, we've reaped another major benefit – outstanding corrosion resistance. Thus, today when mechanical parts operate beneath any of the above conditions, dry film lubricates may be the only safe way to lubricate and protect. The ability to wet dry film lubricates with primary lubrication only adds to the durability factor.
In 1965, a team of polymer chemists and engineers devised the matrix concept for coatings, a concept from which they could build a coating that would protect the soft fluoropolymer from wear, while still taking advantage of its low-friction property.
The PolyDyn coating matrix is composed of three basic ingredients: small particles of solid lubricant for low friction and release; an engineering polymer binder for film strength, adhesion and to protect the softer lubricating particles; pigments/fillers for additional hardness, color and corrosion resistance. These coating materials have a flexible cure schedule.
